The Department of Biology at the University of Oregon offers expertise and research opportunities in a wide range of disciplines including neuroscience, genetics, cell and developmental biology, evolution, ecology, and marine biology. Biology examines the structure, function, growth, origin, evolution, and distribution of living things. The biological and social sciences frequently aim to provide rational explanations for the phenomena they study. In your lab experience, you’ll develop knowledge of the nutrition and growth of bacteria, fungi and viruses that can be used to culture and control microorganisms. On this module you’ll attend lectures and seminars, and take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.
The fourth year consists of an extended project, which can be lab or field based, plus advanced research skills training. A popular branch of molecular biology involves the study of DNA, with the goal of sequencing or mutating it in order to study the effects and possibilities of these processes. On this module you’ll attend lectures, practical classes and workshops and take part in fieldwork study and guided independent study.
New directions in biological research especially from the discovery of the structure of DNA in 1953, as well as new techniques made available in sciences like biochemistry and genetics were at first only slowly integrated by evolutionary biology. Biology pre-health students and others from UNC traveled to Spain over the summer to gain clinical hours, cherished memories and insights from physicians on what it truly means to be a healthcare professional.
Pharmaceutical microbiology is concerned with the study of microorganisms associated with the manufacture of pharmaceuticals. The branch of science which deals with the study of origin of new from old i.e. origin, variation, inter-relationship between organisms of past and present days. Our undergraduate students thrive in an atmosphere that promotes exploration and collaboration across all areas of research and study.
Graduate students from Cristescu Lab collecting environmental DNA at the Gault Nature Reserve, Mount Saint Hilaire. Biology: A natural science concerned with the study of life and living organisms. The branch of science which deals with the study of cells and their organelles. The College of Science Biology program provides students with a broad understanding of the organization and processes of life, from molecules and cells through tissues and organs, to populations, ecosystems, and evolution.
Tilly’s lab seeks to promote a deeper understanding of the genetic and epigenetic drivers of cell lineage specification, differentiation and death, and to then utilize the information gained from these studies for development of innovative new technologies to improve human health within and across. Traditions of medicine, collective knowledge from physicians, works of prominent historical figures such as Aristotle eventually coalesced into the field of study we know today as biology.
